Winter. The time of year that strikes fear into the hearts of many car enthusiasts. Unless of course, you’re of the faction who live & breathe rear wheel drive. But, even for the drift kings amongst us, protecting your ride this winter is a must.
If you care about the vitality of your cars paintwork, it’s important to treat your ride to a quality wax. Now, by quality i dont mean Swissvax. There’s an array of waxes on the market which meet the vital criterias & most importantly, wont destroy your bank balance.
My winter wax of choice has to be Collonite 915.
So, why Collonite? In terms of durability, it’s awesome. It will give you a good 3-6 months of protection from the harsh weather & road salt, with ease. It’s effortless in application, leaves an excellent finish & it’s modestly priced. If your unlucky enough to be using your pride and joy throughout the winter months, you want to be safe in the knowledge that your wax is bearing the brunt of mother nature & not your paintwork. Retailing at around £27.99, this would be a wise purchase to make.
As well as a quality wax, a sprayable sealent is necessary. Not everyone has a heated garage at their disposle and wax can become difficult to apply in cold, damp weather. So, getting your hands on a sprayable formula which is useable right down to freezing point is necessary.
My sprayable sealent of choice for such a task, has to be Werkstat Acrylic Jett Trigger.
So, why Werkstat? The absence of solvents in the formula means that with each application, you don’t remove your previous coat of wax, therefore extending its life & durablity. It also provides an awesome finish, with razor sharp clarity & mirror – like reflectivity. Useable right down to freezing point, this product can be at the very centre of your detailing artillery this winter for around £17.99.
Top Tips
1: Wheel protection – Dont let road salts & winter dirt ruin your wheels. Protect them with a quality product such as Rimwax or Poorboys wheel sealent & make sure to clean them at least once a week.
2: Fabric protection – Keep on top of your upholstery this winter with Gtechniq I1. This stuff creates a protective & durable barrier, which makes light work of cleaning filth & road salts, as they are unable to bed into the fabrics.
3: Clean the areas you cant see – Your cars underside & wheel arches, are subject to large salt deposits & grime build ups in the winter months. It isn’t easy cleaning these areas, but if you aint tucking tyre & hugging the floor, it should be easy enough. A good pressure wash should do the trick.
4: Wash your car often – Dont let road salt & dirt have a resting place. Ideally, use a pressure washer to remove the majority of filth before tackling it by hand. Remember to use the 2 bucket wash method as this reduces damage caused to the paint when washing.
